Varda Space Industries is building commercial space infrastructure, including in-orbit pharmaceutical processing systems and reentry capsules. As Avionics Systems Engineer II, you will oversee the design, integration, and testing of avionics systems for Varda's Winnebago spacecraft, ensuring mission readiness from launch through reentry operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to define project scopes and guide designs from concept through production
- Developing electrical architecture, system diagrams, and budgets for power, telemetry, and mass predictions
- Analyzing system architecture for faults and risks, developing mitigation plans and Fault Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) strategies
- Conducting comprehensive verification and validation plans for avionics systems on flight hardware and Hardware-In-The-Loop (HITL) testbeds
- Participating in mission operations as an avionics specialist, determining system health and recommending corrective actions
- Overseeing integration of Winnebago avionics systems as the primary point of contact for integrated systems investigations
- Designing, building, and operating HITL testbeds that simulate spacecraft behavior on the ground
- Developing avionics ground infrastructure, including test racks and R&D equipment for flight vehicle communication and power
- Contributing to engineering best practices, test automation, and efficiency improvements
- Mentoring and training new engineers to foster continuous learning
You will work at Varda's El Segundo headquarters, which houses the production facility where vehicles, equipment, and materials are built, integrated, and tested. The company was founded in 2021 by veterans from SpaceX, Blue Origin, and major pharmaceutical companies, backed by top-tier investors including Khosla Ventures, Lux Capital, and Founders Fund.
