Impulse is seeking an Avionics Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical design of spacecraft avionics hardware. You will design components and assemblies ranging from PCBA enclosures and mounting brackets to complex systems like battery packs, antennas, and optical devices. This is a hands-on role that moves quickly from concept through flight-ready qualification.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop mechanical hardware for high-performance avionics systems in demanding space environments
- Partner with electrical, structures, thermal, dynamics, and integration engineers to create efficient product architectures
- Own designs end-to-end: concept, analysis, prototype, test, iteration, and qualification
- Perform structural, stress, strain, and thermal analyses on critical performance metrics
- Generate mechanical drawings with GD&T for components and assemblies; coordinate fabrication with in-house machine shop and external vendors
- Create and execute development, validation, and qualification test plans
- Improve manufacturability and assembly by developing clear processes, documentation, and technician-friendly work instructions
- Lead and contribute to design reviews (CoDRs, PDRs, CDRs), communicating design rationale, tradeoffs, and risks to cross-functional teams
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years of mechanical design experience
- Strong CAD skills and ability to learn new tools quickly
- Experience designing metal parts with manufacturing and assembly considerations
- Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerancing
- Strong communication skills to explain design decisions, surface risks, and drive cross-team resolution
