Impulse is seeking an Avionics Manufacturing Engineer with deep expertise in PCB and PCBA technology for spaceflight applications. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and optimizing manufacturing processes for printed circuit board assemblies that directly impact the reliability and performance of vehicles destined for orbit and beyond.
Key responsibilities include developing and qualifying manufacturing processes for PCBAs, writing detailed work instructions for PCBA manufacturing operations (solder rework, conformal coating, staking, underfill), and collaborating with design engineers to ensure manufacturability and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) optimization. You will provide day-to-day technical support to PCBA technicians on the production floor, troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and drive corrective action implementation for non-conformances.
You will optimize production rate, yield, and cost of PCBA manufacturing, write specifications for and lead qualification of PCB and PCBA vendors for both flight and non-flight applications, and ensure timely delivery of PCBAs to box-level assembly. The role requires staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in PCB and PCBA manufacturing to drive innovation. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams on quality and long-term reliability, and support environmental and functional testing in production including TVAC and thermal cycling.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field, with 3+ years of demonstrated manufacturing experience with PCBs and PCBAs. You must have deep understanding of manufacturing processes and materials used in PCB and PCBA manufacturing, experience qualifying vendors for PCB fabrication and PCBA assembly, and hands-on experience with SMT board assembly including designing jigs and fixtures for SMT processes.
