Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company focused on building the fastest aircraft in the world through rapid iterative prototyping and hardware-driven development. The company works with the Department of Defense to deliver high-speed aerospace systems that provide strategic advantage. As an Autonomy Software Engineer, you will develop autonomous systems and control software for advanced aircraft platforms. This role involves designing, implementing, and testing autonomy algorithms, flight control systems, and decision-making software that enable high-speed autonomous operations. You will collaborate with hardware engineers, systems engineers, and test pilots to integrate autonomy capabilities into cutting-edge aircraft. Key responsibilities include: - Developing and optimizing autonomy algorithms for high-speed flight regimes - Implementing real-time control systems and embedded software - Conducting simulation, testing, and validation of autonomous systems - Collaborating with cross-functional teams on system architecture and integration - Iterating rapidly on prototypes based on flight test data and operational requirements - Contributing to technical documentation and design reviews You should have strong software engineering fundamentals, experience with control systems or robotics, and ideally familiarity with aerospace or defense applications. Experience with C/C++, Python, real-time systems, and simulation tools is valuable. A background in autonomous vehicles, drones, or flight control systems is a plus. You must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, hardware-focused environment where iteration speed and practical results matter more than perfect abstractions.
