New Relic's Telemetry Data Platform group is seeking a Java software engineer to contribute to NRDB, the proprietary telemetry database at the core of the company's observability platform. This role focuses on data ingest, storage, and query infrastructure that processes millions of messages per second and handles exabytes of data. You will develop new features with emphasis on performance and efficiency optimization, collaborate with distributed teams across North America and Europe to implement scalable solutions, and identify opportunities to improve service reliability. The team owns software end-to-end and shares on-call pager rotation, prioritizing both operational stability and new product capabilities. Required qualifications include 2+ years of professional experience in distributed SaaS software development, proficiency in Java with strong algorithms and data structures knowledge, and demonstrated expertise building high-throughput systems. You must have a deeper understanding of distributed systems challenges, command-line proficiency for troubleshooting, hands-on experience with databases (MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis, MongoDB), and familiarity with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Kubernetes, Docker). Computer Science fundamentals are essential. Bonus qualifications include experience with networks and load-balancing in low-latency high-throughput systems, modern observability and alerting patterns, Java Flight Recorder and advanced debugging tools, and experience working asynchronously in distributed teams. Note: Visa sponsorship is not available. The role is fully remote within the US.
