Salary: USD 225,000 - 260,000 / annual
Orchard is transforming residential real estate by simplifying the home buying and selling process. The company operates across multiple highly-regulated sectors including mortgage lending, title insurance, and settlement services, serving a network of 600+ agents with 150+ employees.
As Associate General Counsel, you will be the third member of the Legal & Regulatory team, reporting to the General Counsel. This is a full-time hybrid role based in New York City (in-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays), though candidates in select states (DC, CA, CO, FL, GA, MA, MI, MS, NC, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA) may be considered.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as primary legal advisor across commercial and regulatory matters, working independently across multiple practice areas
- Lead commercial partnership negotiations from inception through execution
- Support the mortgage company in building compliant product and service offerings, including expansion into new states
- Partner with title companies to innovate while maintaining state law compliance
- Collaborate with Product & Engineering teams to balance innovation with legal and regulatory risk
- Engage with state regulators on expansion, operational compliance, and regulatory inquiries
- Manage outside counsel relationships across practice areas
- Develop and improve Data Privacy and Information Security policies
- Participate in equity and debt financing transactions
You will navigate a complex, fast-moving environment with significant autonomy, building a track record as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 7 years of experience in commercial and/or regulatory law, ideally combining law firm and in-house roles
- Solid experience with commercial contract negotiation and review, including leading negotiations with large companies
- Preferred: experience with residential real estate law and regulatory frameworks (RESPA, TILA, Fair Housing Act, ECOA, GLBA, state licensing requirements)
- Experience navigating evolving and overlapping regulations in business contexts
- Entrepreneurial mindset; ability to work independently with good judgment and escalation skills
- Strong collaboration and relationship-building abilities across functional teams
- Demonstrated drive for results, work ethic, and ability to prioritize
- Meticulous attention to detail and excellent planning/organization skills
- Preferred: experience with Data Privacy regimes and policy implementation
- Active state bar admission in good standing
