Mistral is seeking an Applied Scientist to drive innovative AI research and collaborate with enterprise clients on complex, high-impact projects. You will develop state-of-the-art models across multiple modalities (text, image, speech) and apply them to diverse use cases in finance, manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and the public sector.
Key responsibilities include:
- Running pre-training, post-training, and deployment of SOTA models on large GPU clusters (thousands of GPUs), troubleshooting distributed training challenges (OOM errors, NCCL issues).
- Generating, curating, and evaluating data for pre-training and post-training pipelines, ensuring model performance exceeds expectations.
- Developing tools and frameworks to streamline data generation, model training, evaluation, and deployment workflows.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with internal and external science, engineering, and product teams to build agents and RAG pipelines for complex client use cases.
- Managing research projects and maintaining communications with client research teams.
Required qualifications:
- Expert-level proficiency in PyTorch or JAX.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong Python coding skills (clean, readable, high-performance, fault-tolerant code).
- Self-directed; comfortable navigating large codebases independently with minimal guidance.
- Track record of success through personal projects, professional work, or academic research.
- Low-ego, collaborative mindset with eagerness to learn.
Nice-to-have qualifications:
- PhD or Master's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Engineering (exceptions made for exceptional candidates).
- Diverse research experience (agents, multi-modality, robotics, diffusion models, time-series).
- Contributions to large, widely-used codebases (open source or industry).
- Publications in top-tier academic journals or conferences.
- Passion for code quality improvements (typing, testing, CI/CD pipelines).
