OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team is seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer to partner with leading organizations on designing, building, and deploying AI systems that deliver measurable business outcomes. This role combines deep technical judgment, hands-on engineering, and customer leadership to take ambitious AI initiatives from use-case selection and architecture through prototyping, evaluation, production launch, and scale.
You will work directly with enterprise and digital-native customers to identify high-value opportunities and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans, and evaluation strategies. Your responsibilities include designing and building AI systems that solve important customer problems, working hands-on in code to develop prototypes and production accelerators, and making sound technical decisions across models, agents, retrieval, tools, data, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security, and governance.
Key responsibilities include partnering with customer engineering teams and OpenAI's Product, Research, Engineering, Security, and go-to-market teams; diagnosing complex implementation challenges; helping customers progress from prototypes to reliable production systems; and creating reusable architectures and playbooks that accelerate future deployments.
You should have a demonstrated track record of designing and delivering AI/ML systems in enterprise environments, taking systems from prototype to production. Relevant backgrounds include applied AI/ML engineering, forward-deployed engineering, software engineering, customer engineering, solutions architecture, or technical consulting. You must be highly proficient in Python and comfortable across an AI application stack, with experience in JavaScript, TypeScript, or other relevant languages valued. Strong understanding of enterprise production requirements—integrations, reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance, and cost—is essential. You should communicate clearly across engineers, technical leaders, security teams, product leaders, and executives, bringing high agency, strong technical judgment, and end-to-end ownership in ambiguous environments.
The role is based in Abu Dhabi with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.
