Magic Patterns is building AI-powered design software with a mission to let anyone create delightful software. The company has grown significantly and is looking for an Applied AI Engineer to join their San Francisco team.
In this role, you will own the evaluation system that powers the company's self-improving AI agent loop, directly shaping the quality of design output that thousands of users rely on daily. You'll push the boundaries of what AI can accomplish in design—the team is already state-of-the-art and wants to go further. Key responsibilities include collaborating with the product team to identify and implement novel solutions for improving agent quality from a user perspective, and deciding what technical problems to tackle from an open-ended roadmap that includes evals with self-improving loops, context engineering, and post-training on design output.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with AI models and/or AI agents, familiarity with building evaluation systems, post-training, or context engineering, and a strong first-principles mindset for distilling complex problems. You should use AI tools in your daily workflow and be excited about the intersection of AI and design.
Magic Patterns values obsessive problem-solving, growth mindset, ownership, and pride in craftsmanship. The team is lean with everyone contributing directly to the product. The company offers competitive salary and equity, 20 days PTO, health/dental/vision coverage, and team offsites.
