OpenAI's Consumer Devices team is building the next generation of AI-native experiences that integrate OpenAI's technology into the devices people use daily. This Android Systems Engineer role focuses on creating deeply integrated AI experiences that go far beyond traditional mobile app development.
You will work across the full Android stack—system-level APIs, device capabilities, platform integrations, and OEM-specific functionality—to enable AI assistants that understand context, help users accomplish multi-step tasks, coordinate across apps and services, and leverage device-specific capabilities. This is platform-level engineering, not application-only development.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing product experiences that leverage Android platform capabilities; developing against Android framework APIs, system services, lifecycle primitives, IPC, permissions, and notifications; unlocking device capabilities like audio, camera, sensors, location, and credentials for context-aware AI; building agentic systems that coordinate actions across applications; creating scalable abstractions and reusable components for multiple devices and OEMs; rapidly prototyping new interaction models and Android capabilities; owning experiences from exploration through production; ensuring reliability, performance, and power efficiency across the Android ecosystem; and designing with privacy and security as core concerns.
You should have deep experience shipping high-quality Android software; strong knowledge of Android platform internals beyond UI development (framework APIs, system services, process lifecycle, permissions, IPC, background execution); high proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java; experience with AOSP, Android framework internals, system applications, or OEM-specific integrations; experience integrating software with hardware and debugging cross-layer problems; understanding of Android ecosystem realities (OS versions, device configurations, OEM customizations, power management, fragmentation); strong product intuition and user experience focus; comfort in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments; ownership mentality; enthusiasm for 0→1 product development; and ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid model (four days in office per week). OpenAI offers relocation assistance.
