Pasqal designs and develops Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) and associated software tools to solve computational challenges beyond the reach of current supercomputers. The company combines exceptional computing power with energy efficiency, contributing to reduced carbon footprint in the HPC industry.
Within the Hardware department's Processing team, you will work at the theory-experiment interface, developing and validating physical operations for Pasqal's neutral-atom QPUs. The team blends experimental and theoretical/numerical expertise, ensuring continuous alignment between modeling and experimental reality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement, characterize, and optimize processing operations including state preparation, gates, dynamical decoupling, and coherent transport
- Design and execute benchmarking experiments (randomized benchmarking and related protocols) to quantify performance, robustness, and limitations
- Develop and use numerical models to interpret experimental results, predict performance, and guide optimization
- Identify dominant experimental error sources (laser noise, motional effects, crosstalk, loss) and drive mitigation actions with hardware and software stakeholders
- Support circuit-level execution including gate scheduling, dynamical decoupling strategies, error accumulation analysis, and QEC protocol implementation/benchmarking
- Contribute to validation of new hardware features through test plan definition, experimental evaluation, and impact quantification
- Write technical reports, scientific documents, and articles
- Contribute to identification and protection of patentable technical ideas
- Represent the company at international conferences, workshops, and industry events
You will work in a dynamic, close-knit international team with flexible hybrid arrangements (minimum 3 days per week on-site in Massy). The role offers opportunities for continuous learning, conference attendance, and involvement in a growing quantum computing startup.
Requirements:
- PhD in AMO physics, quantum physics, or experimental physics
- Solid understanding of neutral-atom platforms (trapping, cooling, lasers, noise sources) and their impact on operation fidelity
- Proven experience implementing and debugging experimental sequences for quantum control (state preparation, single-/two-qubit operations)
- Strong data analysis and scientific programming skills (Python)
- Experience designing and/or using benchmarking protocols (e.g., randomized benchmarking, calibration/characterization experiments)
- Experience driving small to mid-scale technical projects (planning, prioritization, delivery)
- High level of autonomy and rigor
- Proven ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (theory, experimental physics)
- Strong communication and listening skills
- Ability to prioritize and deliver in a fast-paced environment
- Good level of written and spoken English
