Via is a transportation technology platform that powers modern public transit networks globally. As an Algorithm Researcher, you'll join the R&D team in London to develop and maintain Via's proprietary algorithms that run in production across live transportation systems worldwide.
You'll work at the intersection of algorithm development, data science, and software engineering. Your responsibilities include designing and improving core algorithms solving complex real-world transportation problems, exploring and evaluating algorithmic approaches using data and experimentation, developing mission-critical services that bring solutions into production, and analyzing large datasets to optimize algorithm performance. You'll take ownership of technical problems from initial research through production deployment, collaborating closely with algorithm developers, researchers, data scientists, and software engineers.
The ideal candidate holds an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, or a similar quantitative field, with 3+ years of industry experience in algorithm development, data science, research, or software engineering with strong algorithmic focus. You should have deep knowledge of algorithms and data structures, strong Python skills for production-quality code, and experience applying data science and optimization techniques to complex problems. Critical experience includes taking algorithms, models, or prototypes into production systems. DevOps and cloud infrastructure experience (Kubernetes) and cloud system architecture are strong advantages.
You're curious and analytical, enjoying exploration of different approaches and understanding data behind solutions. You're pragmatic, breaking complex problems into manageable pieces with simple, effective solutions. Most importantly, you're hands-on, taking ideas from research or experimentation all the way into production.
