Hex is an AI-powered platform for modern data science and analytics workflows. As an AI Research Engineer, you will partner with product teams to build industry-leading AI experiences, including the Notebook Agent—a highly technical data copilot that writes SQL and Python, builds visualizations, and collaborates with analysts on new inquiries. You will drive Hex's context engine and push forward the capabilities of the Notebook Agent, enabling data teams to build accurate, curated data experiences. Your focus will include pushing the frontiers of SQL generation quality and using LLMs to evaluate agent threads. As one of the team's early hires, you will own initiatives from 0 to 1, including building features, determining architecture and stack for AI-enabled capabilities, and shipping product experiences that fundamentally change how data scientists and analysts operate. Key responsibilities: - Build features and experiences from conception to launch - Partner on architecture and stack decisions for AI-enabled capabilities - Ship product experiences that transform data science workflows - Work at the cutting edge of production AI applications - Run experiments, fine-tune models, deploy AI infrastructure, and maintain experimentation tooling You should have production AI/ML experience (not entry-level), strong enthusiasm for AI applications to real business problems, and understanding of MLOps and software architecture for modern ML applications. Ideal candidates are strong on infrastructure aspects of MLOps. Comfort with both Python and JS/TS is valued, along with an experimentalist mindset, interest in the data space, and commitment to high quality design, correctness, and testing. The tech stack includes TypeScript and React frontend with Apollo GraphQL and Redux, Express/Apollo GraphQL backend with Postgres and Redis, Kubernetes for Python kernels, and AWS/Terraform/Helm for infrastructure. This is a full-time hybrid role based in either San Francisco or New York, with expectations to come into the office at least twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays are main in-person days). The role offers competitive salary, equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible PTO.
