Pelago is a leading specialty substance use care provider that matches treatment intensity to individual member needs. The company has expanded into mental health with Sona, an AI-powered voice-first Mental Health Specialist, combining clinical expertise with technology to improve access without compromising care quality. Pelago serves hundreds of employers and health plans, helping over 750,000 members manage substance use.
The Engineering team operates as empowered, outcome-oriented problem solvers working closely with product, design, and clinical teams. As AI transforms software development, Pelago is evolving its development lifecycle to spend less time on mechanical implementation and more on system design, judgment, and impact.
In this role, you will own meaningful product areas end-to-end—from problem framing and prototyping through production rollout and iteration. You'll partner deeply with product, design, data, and clinical teams to shape solutions that improve member outcomes. You'll build and evolve secure, well-tested, observable software across backend, frontend, and data surfaces, using data and experimentation to validate whether shipped solutions work.
You'll operate autonomously in ambiguous environments, communicating proactively across globally distributed teams. You'll make sound trade-offs across speed, safety, technical quality, and maintainability in a regulated healthcare environment. You'll also help improve Pelago's engineering systems, including AI-native development practices, testing, documentation, and review quality.
The ideal candidate starts with "why" before diving into "how," is energized by ambiguity and collaborative problem-shaping, uses AI to amplify judgment and move faster on what matters, thinks in systems and anticipates second-order effects, and wants to own outcomes rather than just ship features. You should be technically strong enough to ship across the stack, fluent with AI tooling, and grounded enough to make sound trade-offs where member safety, privacy, and reliability matter as much as speed.
