Standard Bots is the largest U.S. industrial robotics company by robots shipped, building the next generation of affordable, scalable industrial robots deployed across independent machine shops, NASA, and Lockheed Martin.
The AI Applications Engineer role sits at the intersection of robotics, AI, and hands-on field work. You'll identify manufacturing challenges where computer vision or language models can make robots smarter, then design, build, and deploy end-to-end solutions. This is a builder's role combining mechanical, electrical, and software expertise—not pure software or hardware engineering.
Key responsibilities include:
**AI Solution Design & POC Development**: Work with customers and sales to identify where AI (computer vision, object detection, visual language models) creates leverage in production. Design and build proofs of concept that validate solutions before deployment. Develop documentation, sample code, and integration guides.
**Field Deployment & Integration**: Travel to customer sites (up to 50% domestically) to install, configure, and commission AI-enabled robotic cells. Own full integration: camera placement, model deployment, I/O configuration, testing, and sign-off. Troubleshoot on-site issues until resolution.
**Customer Training & Support**: Train customer operators and engineers on AI capabilities. Serve as trusted technical resource post-install. Feed real-world learnings back to engineering and product teams.
**Internal Collaboration**: Work with applications and engineering teams on feature testing, peripheral integrations, and platform expansion. Build internal knowledge base on AI-enabled applications.
Required skills: Python proficiency or adjacent software experience; prior robotics knowledge (high school robotics to professional); surface-level ML fluency (CNNs, object detection, VLMs); technical proficiency in engineering environments; willingness to travel domestically.
Required specialization (at least one): Mechanical design (pneumatics, camera mounts, end-of-arm tooling); electrical design (custom boards, relay/solenoid wiring); or machine vision (camera/lens selection, deployed vision systems).
Nice-to-have: collaborative robot experience (UR, Fanuc, KUKA, ABB); production vision systems (Cognex, Basler, FLIR); ROS familiarity; manufacturing/automation background; startup experience.
