fab2 is an early-stage hardware startup designing and manufacturing semiconductor fabrication equipment and tools. The company was founded by Sam Zeloof (known for making chips in his garage) and Jim Keller (40-year semiconductor industry veteran). fab2 designs all hardware and software needed for chip manufacturing and builds the fabs, tools, and components themselves. The Vacuum Systems team is responsible for designing, prototyping, validating, and scaling core semiconductor fabrication equipment. Tool families include Anneal, Deposition, Etch, and Supporting Infrastructure. As a Turbomachinery Design Engineer, you will design, iterate on, and build specialized vacuum systems equipment for semiconductor fabrication. You'll own semiconductor fabrication systems and subsystems end-to-end, including deposition, etch, annealing, and plasma tools, as well as subsystems such as mass flow controllers, pressure sensors, valves, scroll pumps, and turbo pumps. You will create mechanical designs including frames, components, and assemblies, partner closely with process, electrical, software, and production teams, and source components and materials while working with vendors to meet project specifications. The company philosophy emphasizes getting things built and tested in days or weeks—not months—with a focus on viable solutions that meet real production needs. The ideal candidate moves through design cycles fast and can own the end-to-end process. A portfolio demonstrating things you've actually built is generally required. fab2 has solid funding, world-class advisors, and labs/offices in Austin, TX, Lockhart, TX, and San Francisco, CA. The company offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, visa sponsorship, life and disability insurance, paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, weekly learning & development opportunities, commuter benefits, and daily lunches with dinners three times per week. REQUIREMENTS: - 2-7 years of professional experience in mechanical and electromechanical system design - 2-7 years of hands-on experience building, prototyping, and assembling complex systems - Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or Physics - Experience in designing vacuum systems or fluid handling hardware - Strong fundamentals in fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer - Demonstrated ability to design and ship machined and fabricated metal parts into working systems - Comfortable working with pumps, valves, fittings, tubing, chambers, and thermal systems - Portfolio of work you've built (generally required) NICE-TO-HAVE: - Knowledge/experience with plasma systems, CVD, ALD - Familiarity with leak detection techniques and vacuum diagnostics - Experience with productionization and testing
