Mercury is a fintech platform providing banking, treasury, and financial workflow solutions for startups and technology companies. The company operates as an SEC-registered investment advisor and FINRA-member broker-dealer, serving customers through a network of external partners. You will lead and scale Mercury's trading operations function, owning the complete trading operations and supervisory framework. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring deep expertise in brokerage and trading operations, with responsibility for both strategic direction and direct involvement in complex operational work. Key responsibilities include: • Establish and maintain the trading operations and supervisory framework, providing licensed principal oversight of order and trade activity across money market funds, mutual funds, ETFs, and fixed income products. Oversee operational controls, reconciliations, exceptions, and escalations in partnership with Engineering and Product teams and external carrying brokers. • Own the trade surveillance and operational control framework, including licensed supervisory review, pre- and post-trade controls, best execution monitoring, trade breaks and errors, and escalation procedures. Coordinate with Financial Crimes on surveillance alerts and suspicious activity escalations. • Manage trading and order-flow reporting obligations, including CAT (Consolidated Audit Trail), CAIS, and TRACE reporting. Ensure compliance with SEC Rules 606, 607, and FINRA Rule 6151. Provide supervisory review of customer account statements and trade confirmations. • Serve as the operational escalation point for trade errors, breaks, and settlement issues. Coordinate investigation and resolution across Engineering, Product, Compliance, and external partners. Assess customer impact and drive process improvements for recurring issues. • Oversee trading-related books and records requirements, ensuring required trade, order, allocation, and supervisory records are appropriately generated, retained, and retrievable. • Own and maintain trading operations procedures and Written Supervisory Procedures, ensuring documented controls remain aligned with products, systems, and partner relationships. • Lead trading operations readiness for regulatory exams, audits, and internal testing. Produce operational evidence, support regulatory responses, remediate findings, and translate gaps into sustainable improvements. • Manage day-to-day operational relationships with carrying brokers, executing brokers, custodians, fund companies, and transfer agents, including escalations and service-level performance. • Partner with Product and Engineering on system-managed trading workflows and controls, bringing operational and supervisory perspective to requirements and ensuring appropriate readiness before and after launch. • Build reporting and operational visibility for the trading function, including volumes, breaks, exceptions, settlement performance, and control effectiveness. Use insights to identify risk and improvement opportunities. • Collaborate with Compliance, Finance, Legal, Risk, Product, and Engineering on new products, partners, and regulatory changes, defining trading operations and supervisory requirements. Requirements: • Active FINRA Series 7, Series 63, and Series 24 licenses (Series 99 or Series 57 preferred). • 8+ years in trading, brokerage, or investment operations, including direct ownership of trade lifecycle, settlement, or trading control functions. • Hands-on operational experience across fixed income, mutual funds, and ETFs. • Demonstrated experience building or materially improving a trade surveillance or operational control framework. • Strong working knowledge of FINRA and SEC operational requirements, including recordkeeping, supervision, best execution, trade reporting, and customer protection. • Excellent written communication skills for procedures, escalations, and post-mortems. • Comfort operating in ambiguity and at speed; ability to design processes rather than wait for direction. • Sound judgment about automation, controls, and manual steps, with ability to defend decisions. Nice to have: • Experience at a fintech or high-growth firm operating a broker-dealer or RIA at scale. • Experience standing up new products, partners, or clearing relationships from scratch. • Comfort with SQL or internal tooling for direct issue investigation.
