Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries including food, mining, and transport. The company integrates hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate to deploy and scale autonomous systems in real-world environments.
You will serve as the Technical Writer responsible for building and maintaining the documentation backbone of manufacturing and engineering operations as the company scales toward mass production. This is a hands-on, floor-facing role where you'll spend significant time at workstations observing builds, interviewing technicians, and capturing process details firsthand to translate tribal knowledge into clear, consistent documentation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Standardizing work instructions across manufacturing workstations with consistent format, detail level, and visual style
- Maintaining a living build-step instruction set that evolves as workstations multiply, processes change, and engineering updates are introduced
- Building, updating, and revising procedures for test steps, test programs, rework processes, and build procedures
- Organizing and maintaining the knowledge base with new pages and improved structure for discoverability
- Reviewing BOM changes and publishing release notes from engineering to ensure production teams understand what changed and why
- Building troubleshooting and diagnostic documentation from field data to reduce downtime
- Supporting engineering documentation standards as the team grows
This is an early-stage hire with high impact: documentation quality directly affects build consistency, training speed, and operational downtime. You'll work cross-functionally with production, engineering, and quality teams in a fast-moving environment.
All office-based teams work onsite five days per week in the San Francisco office (SoMa).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience writing technical or process documentation in manufacturing, hardware, automotive, aerospace, or similarly hands-on production environments
- Comfort working directly on the production floor—observing builds, interviewing technicians, translating hands-on knowledge into clear written and visual instructions
- Strong organizational instincts; natural thinking in terms of structure, version control, and findability
- Experience with Notion and Linear (or similar knowledge-base tools) for building and organizing documentation systems
- Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and production teams while keeping documentation in sync during rapid changes
- Clear, concise writing ability—making complex processes understandable to first-time readers
- Comfort with ambiguity and building processes from scratch; role will evolve as organization scales
- Preferred: familiarity with BOM structures, engineering change processes (ECOs/ECNs), or PLM tools
- Preferred: experience building troubleshooting/diagnostic trees or decision-based guides
- Preferred: background supporting test engineering or test procedure documentation
- Preferred: experience documenting for pre-mass-production or scaling manufacturing environments
