OpenAI is seeking a technically deep Technical Program Manager to independently define and lead multiple programs across data platforms, online databases, and storage infrastructure. This role bridges model, product, and data-consumer requirements with architecture, working with engineering teams to move new capabilities through production adoption and repeatable expansion.
The scope encompasses exabyte-scale storage and infrastructure spanning millions of CPU cores. The core challenge is making workload-ready capacity repeatable with a clear path from product requirements through architecture, deployment, and validation. You will connect data pipeline, database query, file operation, and execution snapshot outcomes to the systems underneath, directly influencing whether products and agents succeed.
Key responsibilities include:
- Translating model, product, and data-platform needs into precise access patterns, consistency, durability, freshness, availability, and scalability requirements
- Partnering with engineering to transform data and storage architecture into repeatable scale units with standardized provisioning, placement, routing, and readiness checks
- Leading cross-stack programs connecting ingestion, processing, databases, indexes, and file/object storage with explicit data ownership and consumer-readiness contracts
- Making cost and efficiency architectural inputs by evaluating physical vs. logical footprint, replication, tiering, caching, and network movement
- Driving resilience and recovery programs with explicit failure scenarios and validation across database backup, failover, and execution recovery
- Coordinating lifecycle correctness across files, objects, databases, and data platforms, incorporating privacy, access control, and residency requirements
- Leading adoption and major migrations through compatibility checks, workload testing, staged cutovers, and operational handoff
- Measuring architecture changes through product and platform outcomes including task completion, data freshness, latency, throughput, reliability, and cost efficiency
Ideal candidates have independently owned complex production programs in data platforms, databases, or storage infrastructure; deep knowledge of hyperscaler/cloud storage technologies (S3, Azure Blob); understanding of the full data and storage stack; ability to translate requirements into precise platform specifications; experience leading delivery across product, model, data, database, storage, and infrastructure teams; and strong communication skills with ownership through production adoption.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in-office per week. Relocation assistance is available.
