OpenAI's Robotics team is seeking a Technical Program Manager to drive the development and integration of sensor systems for advanced robotic platforms. This role sits at the intersection of hardware engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain, requiring deep cross-functional coordination across multiple technical disciplines.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drive requirements alignment and tradeoff analysis across engineering design, integration, testing, and validation for camera modules, LiDAR, IMUs, RADAR, proximity sensors, and audio components.
- Coordinate the integration of sensor modules with the full robotic system, managing electrical, mechanical, harnessing, and software interfaces.
- Establish and maintain technical review cadences, BOM readiness processes, change management protocols, and production release workflows.
- Lead validation planning for functional, reliability, and failure-mode analysis, including test schedules and exit criteria.
- Partner with manufacturing and supply chain teams to manage handoffs, lead times, dependencies, and production readiness.
- Quantify and resolve tradeoffs across cost, quality, performance, schedule, and lead time through cross-functional collaboration.
Ideal candidates bring experience developing and integrating sensor systems (cameras, microphones, radar, proximity sensing) into mobile robots or similar electromechanical platforms. You should have led complex hardware programs from requirements through manufacturing, understand engineering development systems (version control, change management, technical reviews), and work effectively across engineering, test, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.
Success is measured by aligned requirements and interfaces across teams, sensor subsystems moving smoothly from design through production with clear milestones, effective technical governance, early risk surfacing and closure, quantified tradeoff resolution, and embedded workflows that accelerate hardware development from design to field trials.
