Ramp is building smart infrastructure for finance teams, automating how over $200B in annualized spend flows through 70,000+ companies. The Production Engineering team owns Ramp's infrastructure layer, embedded in the company's core problems rather than adjacent to them. This role is a Tech Lead and Manager position within Production Engineering, responsible for leading a team while remaining a hands-on full software engineer specializing in infrastructure.
You will build and operate critical infrastructure across Ramp's compute, storage, messaging, and observability stack, handling real financial transactions at scale. Key responsibilities include: driving architectural change across the organization by proposing solutions and coordinating cross-team resolution; partnering with product teams at the design phase to embed golden paths and ensure correct-first-time building; contributing hands-on to Ramp's cellular architecture migration to enable international scaling, regulated environments (FedRAMP), and enterprise SLAs; enabling AI-native engineering by proactively partnering with product teams on AI infrastructure patterns; building developer tooling and self-service infrastructure so other teams can independently answer questions about cost, performance, and reliability; participating in on-call rotation and using incidents as signals to eliminate root causes; and leading company-wide reliability and scalability initiatives from problem identification through stakeholder alignment to completion.
Production Engineering operates as one integrated team with product engineering—there is no separate "infra team." The culture emphasizes high agency, urgency, and ownership. Engineers move fast when appropriate but slow down to do things right. Success is measured by how much faster product teams can ship and how much better systems become over time.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years of software engineering experience shipping high-quality architectures for critical systems
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean, well-tested, production-ready code
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems at production scale
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred)
- Familiarity with observability practices (SLOs, error budgets, alerting, dashboards)
- Track record of leading technical projects end-to-end, including cross-team coordination
- Comfortable using AI tooling and coding agents as part of everyday engineering workflow
BONUS (not required):
- Experience with cellular or multi-tenant architecture patterns
- Prior work on workflow orchestration systems (Temporal)
- Contributions to developer experience or internal platform tooling
- Experience in fintech, payments, or regulated industries (FedRAMP, SOC 2)
