We are seeking a System Performance Engineer to serve as the analytical core of our camera and sensing systems team. You will own the end-to-end characterization of system performance, from risk and failure mode mapping through methodology definition, execution, analysis, and reporting.
In this role, you will define what we measure and why, mining large volumes of measurement data to isolate the effects that truly matter. You'll take questions that have never been answered before and develop defensible answers through rigorous analysis. The work is highly collaborative—you will partner directly with module, optics, algorithm, and system teams, with your conclusions forming the basis of their design decisions. You will work alongside our lead system engineer as a peer, with problems allocated based on where the issue actually sits.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own system performance characterization end-to-end, from risk mapping through reporting
- Define metrics, testing, and measurement methodology
- Mine large datasets to isolate performance root causes
- Correlate physical measurements to human perception, bridging hardware and user experience
- Build analysis capabilities including pipelines, tooling, and methods
- Present and defend findings to cross-functional teams
This role requires someone who genuinely enjoys digging into data until it reveals its secrets, and who wants to apply that analytical rigor to camera and sensing systems used by hundreds of millions of people daily.
Requirements:
- MSc in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with at least 3 years of hands-on experimental and analytical experience
- Strong data analysis and visualization skills; ability to digest empirical data to answer questions and explain the analytical approach
- Experience designing experiments to isolate single effects, with statistical judgment for sample size, repeatability, and measurement error assessment
- Detailed understanding of optical sensing and imaging systems: image sensors, illumination sources, optical elements, and governing tolerances
- Great interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across the organization
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD in Optics, Physics, EE, or equivalent
- Background in image quality assessment and associated metrics
- Experience with depth sensing, calibration, or autofocus systems
- Large-scale data handling, automated analysis pipelines, or AI tooling for engineering analysis
- Hands-on lab experience with optical setups and electrical equipment
- Consumer electronics industry experience and vendor relationships
- Experience defining and tracking requirements and specifications from system level through sub-modules
