Salary: USD 181,600 - 272,400 / annual
Duolingo is seeking a Staff Technical Program Manager to lead strategic, high-impact cross-functional initiatives within the Duolingo English Test (DET) domain. This role operates at the Staff level with significant autonomy, driving strategy across multiple workstreams and providing steady leadership through ambiguity and external scrutiny.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the delivery of strategic initiatives from conceptualization through launch, partnering with engineering, product, data science, legal, security, and external stakeholders
- Translating regulatory, compliance, and business requirements into clear technical plans and durable execution
- Developing detailed plans with key milestones, identifying and mitigating risks, solving dependencies, and removing impediments
- Partnering across functions—engineering, QA, product management, and executive leadership—to ensure alignment and collaboration
- Driving decisions when difficult tradeoffs must be made, including those with cross-organizational or company-level impact
- Guiding and training others on standard processes, scaling guidelines across teams, and improving how product and engineering organizations operate
- Identifying issues impacting delivery efficiency company-wide and taking action to resolve them
Required qualifications:
- Strong experience as TPM, Engineering Lead, or Manager
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent degree/experience
- Experience with commercial software products and their underlying infrastructure, with understanding of client-service architecture
- Proven ability to communicate technical issues effectively to technical and non-technical partners
- Track record of building and implementing detailed plans accounting for ambiguity, dependencies, and technical complexity in agile environments
- Outstanding leadership and influence in matrix environments, including influencing senior leaders without direct authority
- Ability to operate effectively with high-level direction, setting strategy across multiple teams or workstreams
- Demonstrated self-direction and desire to learn new techniques while guiding others
- Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA
Exceptional candidates may have:
- Software engineering, systems engineering, or similar experience in addition to project/program management
- Deep AWS experience
- Experience with globally distributed teams and technical projects
- Experience running projects involving machine learning and large datasets
- Ability to articulate business questions and use data to inform business recommendations
