Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to build the financial engineering platform that powers the company's accounting and billing infrastructure. This is a distributed systems role with an exceptionally high correctness bar—every transaction must be accurate to the cent, replay cleanly, and explain any number as of any date at scale. You will architect and build the core platform that serves as the single entry point for all finance events across Anthropic: an append-only ledger, an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once, and a comprehensive system of controls. The platform will handle data from usage and billing, compute, infrastructure assets, leases, and new products as they launch. Your system will support both human users and Claude agents reading and writing through the same APIs and controls. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build the front door into finance: APIs for applications and agents, an event bus for publishing systems, adapters for vendor applications and reports, data-quality gates, and processing that ensures idempotent posting with replay and backfill capabilities - Drive development of the accounting ledger and engine: an append-only ledger with idempotent posting, a rules framework that translates business events into journal entries, translation into the ERP system, and period locks - Design and build SDKs and frameworks that finance applications and agents depend on - Embed controls into the platform as code: immutable audit trails, maker-checker workflows, scoped access, and segregation of duties - Build and operate production services that other engineering teams call in real time (such as tax and collections services in the billing flow), owning reliability targets for uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness - Shape the platform's technical direction: architecture decisions, engineering standards, and design reviews You will work closely with software engineers in Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure on shared contracts and APIs, and with product owners, finance operations, and internal audit to translate accounting and controls requirements into technical designs. No finance background is required—if you have built backend systems where correctness matters, the team will teach you the domain. REQUIREMENTS: Minimum qualifications: - Strong backend engineering in a statically typed language (Go, Java, Rust) or Python at scale - Experience designing and running high-volume, event-driven systems (publish/subscribe, streaming) with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill - Experience designing relational data models and writing SQL for complex, versioned data - Experience designing APIs, SDKs, and service-to-service integrations used by other teams - Experience building systems with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements - Experience translating requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs - Strong written and verbal communication, including design documentation - Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience Preferred qualifications: - 10+ years of experience - Experience building developer platforms or paved paths - Experience with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka - Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP - Built a ledger, sub-ledger, billing, or payments system - Familiarity with accounting concepts: double-entry bookkeeping, journal entries - Familiarity with internal controls and audit concepts: audit trails, segregation of duties, change management - Exposure to ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials
