ResortPass is a marketplace platform that gives people daytime access to hotel pools, beaches, spas, cabanas, and other experiences without overnight stays. Operating across 2,700+ hotel partners in 30 countries with 7+ million guests served, the company has secured major partnerships with Marriott and Hilton and is now building the booking and distribution platform to scale further.
You will join as a Staff Engineer reporting to the Head of Engineering, leading the technical evolution of the booking platform and external APIs. This is a hands-on individual contributor role where you will write core production code, guide implementation with other backend engineers, and partner with a Distinguished Engineer on architectural decisions affecting the wider platform.
Key responsibilities include:
- Evolving clear models and boundaries for products, pricing, availability, holds, and reservations, representing category differences explicitly (e.g., day passes sold by capacity vs. massages requiring time slots and resources).
- Building and launching a versioned external API for pricing, availability, holds, booking, changes, and cancellations, with access controls, documentation, and a practical path from partner testing to production.
- Making booking operations reliable through retries, timeouts, and partial failures; designing idempotency, concurrency controls, webhooks, and reconciliation to prevent duplicate bookings and inventory errors.
- Establishing reusable patterns for supply, property management, and point-of-sale integrations, with clear data ownership and failure handling.
- Leading incremental migrations in the existing Rails/OpenSearch/Postgres system, setting reliability and latency targets, testing failure scenarios, and ensuring the team can observe, operate, and safely roll back changes.
- Helping engineers take ownership of larger problems through design reviews, pairing, and mentoring; explaining tradeoffs and following work through production.
Success in 6–12 months means: an initial distribution partner using the API for the full booking lifecycle; additional partners reusing those contracts and patterns; booking correctness, reliability, latency, and recovery meeting targets under real usage; at least one new experience category using shared booking capabilities; and other backend engineers independently extending the platform and launching connectors.
The role is located at the Flatiron HQ four days per week.
Tech stack: Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Postgres, MongoDB, OpenSearch, REST/OpenAPI/webhooks, AWS, Datadog, RSpec, Playwright.
Requirements:
- 9+ years of experience or equivalent demonstrated depth and scope (the company emphasizes impact over title).
- Led substantial technical work across multiple engineers or teams, from ambiguous business problems through launch and operation.
- Designed transactional systems and APIs or integration platforms that other teams or companies depend on.
- Deep understanding of relational modeling, concurrency, consistency, and asynchronous workflows, including failure and disagreement scenarios.
- Experience safely evolving existing production systems; judgment on when to extend, simplify, or replace components.
- Remain a strong hands-on engineer; make pragmatic tradeoffs and help teammates deliver without becoming an approval bottleneck.
- Clear communication, careful listening, and trust-building with engineers and business partners; ability to challenge assumptions and adapt when evidence changes.
- Ruby on Rails experience is useful but not required. Experience with marketplaces, reservations, inventory, payments, or public APIs is helpful. Applicants not matching every line are encouraged to apply.
