Salary: USD 185,300 - 276,000 / annual
Meadow is a modern payments platform transforming the $600 billion higher education payments industry. The company is building for universities what Shopify built for retail businesses, bringing the entire student financial experience online.
You will design, build, and operate core systems across Meadow's backend and frontend stack, partnering closely with Product, CX, and Integrations teams. This role requires strong technical judgment, high quality standards, and ownership of meaningful product areas from concept through production. AI tooling (Cursor, Claude, Codex) is core to how the team works and ships code daily.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead end-to-end development of product features from design through deployment and ongoing support
- Architect and build scalable backend services and APIs (TypeScript/Node.js)
- Contribute to frontend development using modern frameworks (React preferred)
- Design systems with reliability, observability, and maintainability in mind
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, CX, and Integrations teams
- Participate in code reviews and uphold high standards for code quality and system design
- Improve engineering processes, tooling, and documentation to support scale
- Help shape technical decisions and engineering culture as the company grows
The role reports to Mike Ferraco, Engineering Manager. This is a full-time position with a distributed team; offices are in New York, NY and San Mateo, CA, but this role is fully remote for US-based candidates.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of experience in product engineering, with proven track record building and operating production systems at scale
- Demonstrated ownership and builder mindset: high agency, high urgency, end-to-end problem ownership, comfort making consequential decisions under uncertainty
- Strong product sense: deep user empathy across segments and personas, creativity in solving ambiguous problems, high quality bar across full stack
- Technical depth in design and architecture, problem-solving across multiple components, tooling and verification, and tech debt management
- AI fluency: default to AI-first approaches where appropriate, strong judgment about tradeoffs and failure modes, experience building workflows or practices that improve output
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, ability to facilitate cross-functional discussions and guide debates to consensus
Desirable qualifications:
- Experience at early-stage startups (Seed, Series A, Series B)
- Experience in FinTech or other regulated industries
- Experience as a people manager and/or technical lead
