Develop Health is using AI to accelerate access to life-saving medications by automating complex healthcare processes like benefit verification and prior authorization. The company has already helped over 2.5 million patients and is scaling rapidly following a major funding round, partnering with major pharmacy benefit managers and payers. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll own the technical direction of major product areas and drive complex initiatives from discovery through production. You'll work across backend services, user interfaces, data models, integrations, and AI-powered workflows. In your first 3–6 months, you'll partner with Product, AI, and Operations to turn ambiguous healthcare problems into reliable software solutions. You'll lead product initiatives end-to-end, defining technical approaches and personally building critical components. You'll make architectural decisions across systems, build in testing and observability from the start, and iterate using production evidence and user feedback. Beyond 6 months, you'll own technical direction and customer outcomes for major product areas, solve cross-product technical problems, build shared services to accelerate shipping, and shape the roadmap using customer and operational data. A key part of the role is building AI-native tools and engineering processes that help the entire team work with agents throughout development—from planning and implementation through review, testing, and production. You'll raise the bar for the engineering team through your technical decisions and by sharing AI-native tools and practices. The role is hands-on with direct ownership from understanding user needs through launch and production support. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years of software engineering experience - Hands-on ability to build, debug, and operate software across backend services, data, and user interfaces - Strong architectural judgment: can define clear system boundaries and weigh delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability - Product sense: work directly with users to identify problems worth solving and define success metrics - AI-native execution: use coding agents to multiply productivity while maintaining judgment and verification for reliable shipping - Technical leadership experience: led complex projects hands-on, aligned collaborators and stakeholders, mentored engineers, built tools and processes that remove blockers - Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly BONUS: - Experience building AI-powered or automation-heavy products in production - Healthcare domain experience (clinical workflows, EHRs, payers, pharmacies, or other regulated domains) - Early-stage startup experience or demonstrated ability to thrive with high ownership and limited structure - Experience building workflow products, data-heavy interfaces, or third-party integrations
