Kuro is building the AI foundation for the construction industry. After 14 years in construction tech, founders Lea and Jonas are tackling the root cause of inefficiency: the 50% of construction work still lost to manual data handling. The company has already achieved significant traction—6 of the 20 largest construction companies in the German-speaking region rely on Kuro daily, representing over €40bn in combined annual construction volume. Backed by a €10 million seed round, Kuro processes over 1 million pages monthly and expects 10x growth in the next six months.
As Staff Software Engineer - AI, you will set the technical direction for the platform, owning architecture decisions from document ingestion to the chat UI. You'll write and review RFCs, define the technical roadmap for the next 2-3 quarters, and make critical build-or-buy decisions around models, retrieval, and orchestration stacks. You'll turn vague customer requests into scoped plans with identified risks.
You'll raise the bar for the 15-person engineering team by mentoring engineers, reviewing designs and code, defining engineering standards, and interviewing/hiring new team members. While you'll have no direct reports, you'll influence decisions across product and other teams through written arguments.
You'll build and own end-to-end AI features solving specific user problems—from concept through database schema, LLM optimization, and UI. You'll manage evaluations, scoring, and error analysis on shipped AI features. You'll contribute to the workflow harness, decision-trace standard, and eval tooling to enable new use cases to ship in ~1 month. You'll help model and evolve the construction ontology and project graph, including entity resolution across sources (BoQs, contracts, drawings, bids) and building evidence-linked, auditable features.
You'll also contribute to scalable data pipelines and integrations, extending multi-modal ingestion of unstructured documents (PDFs, scans, drawings, 3D models) and building read/write integrations with customer systems (document management, ERP/AVA).
Current tech stack: Typescript (web), AWS RDS/Turbopuffer/S3, Fastify + Prisma, Prefect (Python), AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Azure/OpenAI/Gemini/Cohere/AWS for AI, Langfuse and Datadog for observability. The company is pragmatic about tooling and you'll significantly shape tech stack decisions.
Recent projects include project & document versioning with data lineage, German tokenizer for construction search, document pipelines ingesting 10,000s of PDFs daily, native BIM/DWG file support, construction ontology v1 + graph schema design, and agentic workflow harness.
You'll join a team of technical ex-founders and builders who are ambitious and kind, based in Berlin. The role offers the opportunity to shape a high-impact applied AI product at an early stage when customer demand is proven but the product and platform are still yours to define. As Kuro grows, you can grow as a leading individual contributor, technical leader, or people manager.
