Lendable is a UK-based fintech unicorn (800+ employees, profitable since 2017, backed by Balderton Capital and Goldman Sachs) rebuilding consumer finance products—loans, credit cards, and car finance—with modern technology. The company serves millions of customers across the UK and US, targeting markets where trillions in financial products are held by legacy banking systems.
You will own quality engineering for Zable, Lendable's mobile app (React Native + TypeScript frontend, Kotlin backend, shipping to iOS and Android). As the company scales and accelerates release cadence with AI-assisted development, you'll ensure quality metrics don't regress. This is an automation-first role focused on writing code—test frameworks, CI tooling, helpers—rather than manual testing.
Key responsibilities:
**Mobile Test Strategy**: Define and evolve a pragmatic test pyramid for React Native, making deliberate trade-offs between E2E, Jest, React Testing Library, and component tests. Set the bar for "ready to ship" and hold the line.
**Enable Teams**: Rotate through product teams to level up quality practices. Define test pyramids, coverage/reliability/speed trade-offs, and devise performance benchmarks to prevent regressions.
**AI-Assisted Testing**: Build agents that exploratory test changes before production. Use AI tools daily to accelerate test authoring, cluster failures, surface coverage gaps, and propose fixes. Apply engineering judgment to keep tests trustworthy.
**Reliable E2E Automation**: Discover testing gaps, build comprehensive suites, stabilize test environments and data fixtures, drive down flakiness and time-to-diagnosis. Treat flaky tests as broken tests requiring root-cause work.
**Shift-Left Quality**: Partner with product and engineering early in specs, push back on ambiguous acceptance criteria, surface risk before code is written. Close the loop on production issues using Datadog, Sentry, Grafana. Ensure Service Level Objectives are set and achieved. Run targeted exploratory testing on high-risk releases.
You'll work alongside software engineers, product, and design, setting direction and operating independently to drive improvements end-to-end.
**Requirements:**
- 5+ years in quality engineering or test automation with a track record of keeping automated suites stable (not letting them rot into quarantined-test graveyards)
- Hands-on experience with Maestro or Detox
- Hands-on coding: writing test code, frameworks, CI pipelines, helper scripts. You know what a good test codebase looks like and constantly improve it
- Experience in scaled engineering environments with multiple teams and competing priorities; know how to navigate to drive cross-team quality improvements
- API and contract testing experience with a point of view on test data and environment strategy
- Have set up and used Service Level Objectives to define system reliability contracts and driven measurable improvements
- Native AI-assisted working style: can describe projects where AI meaningfully changed how you worked (test authoring, failure triage, coverage analysis) and where you decided it wasn't the right tool
- Coaching other disciplines in quality; evangelize quality practices and get others on board
- Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines for test reliability (GitHub Actions or similar): flakiness reduction, parallelization, artifact management, runtime control
- Proactive, low-ego, clear communicator; able to chase things down when blocked
- Can operate independently and drive improvements end-to-end
- Can point to 3–4 projects where you moved the needle on quality (e.g., improving SLO coverage, reducing incident rate) with measurable impact
**Nice to have:**
- Hands-on experience testing React Native apps
- Mobile performance and reliability work (crash reporting, startup time, memory and battery awareness)
