Lunar Outpost, an industry leader in space robotics and planetary vehicles, is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer for Research and Development to contribute to the design and development of the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), which will carry NASA astronauts on the lunar surface.
In this role, you will lead mechanical design efforts across vehicle structures, electronics packaging, mechanisms, and deployable structures. You will apply best practices in CAD to ensure robustness and reliability in complex designs. Key responsibilities include performing loads and stress analysis (FEA and hand calculations) to optimize parts for weight savings and demonstrate that designs survive anticipated loads. You will participate in material, hardware, actuator, and sensor selection; inspect and assemble hardware; and engage in rapid prototyping and testing to validate concepts quickly and cost-effectively.
You will ensure mechanical designs comply with NASA standards (mechanisms approaches, structural margin, tolerance stack-up, etc.) and prepare engineering products for milestone and safety reviews. Working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, you will manage time allocations across multiple projects while adhering to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. You will also develop manufacturing plans for parts using CNC milling, 3D printing, welding, turning, sheet metal bending, and water-jetting/laser cutting.
The position is hybrid: onsite Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the option to work remotely on Wednesdays. Additional hours may be required based on business needs.
