OpenLoop is a telehealth infrastructure platform that powers virtual care delivery for digital-health brands, clinics, and employers across all 50 states. The company provides the clinical and operational backbone—clinicians, intake, scheduling, charting, pharmacy, fulfillment, payments, and licensing—while clients bring their own brand and user experience.
As a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be the technical architect leading the most complex client deployments and setting the pattern for the Forward Deployed Engineering team. You embed directly with enterprise clients, work in their codebases, and build integrations against OpenLoop's production API. Your work generates reusable assets that benefit all future clients: API recipes, executable documentation checks, client manifests, SDKs, and AI-native tooling.
Key responsibilities include:
- Embed with clients and own end-to-end integration delivery through go-live and beyond, building against the Partner API while identifying and filing platform gaps rather than working around them.
- Design and ship AI SDKs and agentic solutions, including backend/frontend systems, CLIs, machine-readable docs for coding agents, and agentic workflows (intake, routing, support, refill) with human review built in.
- Architect the AI-assisted deployment process: own the agent roster that runs deployments, including tenant readiness gates, conformance checks, docs freshness, gap filing, and client communication drafts.
- Turn client needs into platform improvements: convert one-off workarounds into shared recipes, build impact analysis tooling, establish API conventions, and provide evidence to move recurring patterns into the roadmap.
- Translate ambiguous or over-promised client asks into phased, defensible scopes with clear statements of what is and isn't possible.
- Maintain system integrity through checks, manifests, and additive-only changes; stop breaking changes and convert them into proposals with compatibility windows.
- Serve as the credible technical voice with clients and internally, clearly distinguishing between what cannot be done, what should not be done, and what won't fit the timeline.
- Mentor FDEs and deployment strategists, calibrate deployment processes, and help build the team playbook.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time delivering directly for external customers or partners in their environments (not only internal roadmap work).
- Proven end-to-end ownership of complex, customer-facing technical deliveries; ability to name specific deployments, what went wrong, and post-launch actions.
- Strong integration engineering depth: API design and consumption, authentication, webhooks vs. polling, idempotency, rate limits, pagination, schema drift, reconciliation, and full-stack comfort from APIs to data to cloud infrastructure.
- Daily experience building with AI agents; demonstrated ability to verify agent output, know when to stop trusting them, and evaluate LLM-based systems before customer deployment.
- Experience handling sensitive data with security-first mindset; treating compliance constraints as design inputs.
- Excellent communication with technical and non-technical audiences, including delivering unwelcome news early while maintaining relationships.
- Demonstrated judgment about scope: ability to point to descoped, sequenced, or declined work with clear reasoning.
- Evidence of leverage beyond personal delivery: SDKs, tooling, checks, reference implementations, or practices that made others' work faster.
Preferred qualifications:
- Healthcare or regulated-domain experience where mistakes have consequences beyond rollback.
- Practical experience shipping LLM-based or agentic systems to production, including quality measurement and handling confidently wrong model outputs.
- Developer platform experience: SDKs, CLIs, API conventions, tested documentation.
- Familiarity with EHR, scheduling, pharmacy, or payments integrations; FHIR knowledge is a plus.
- Pre-sales technical experience working alongside sales/solutions teams without becoming a blocker.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Core collaboration hours are CST 8am–5pm, with occasional client-facing flexibility required. Remote within the United States; periodic travel to clients and team working sessions expected.
