Salary: USD 152,000 - 190,000 / annual

IonQ's systems are used by customers including Amazon Web Services and AstraZeneca for applications in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. This Staff Cryogenic Engineer role is based onsite in Boston, MA with approximately 10% domestic and international travel. You will be an integral part of the commercialization process for IonQ's SiV quantum memories, with applications across quantum computing, networking, and sensing. Your mission is to develop and mature cryogenic subsystems for defect-center based quantum memory nodes, transforming R&D-scale subsystems and processes into robust, reliable elements deployable at IonQ and customer sites that can be efficiently maintained and updated as the technology evolves. Key responsibilities include customizing commercially available cryostats for quantum memory-specific needs, working with vendors to design and configure deployable cryogenic systems, collaborating with internal IonQ teams to improve current cryogenic platforms, and providing operational support for the current fleet of cryostats. As a Staff-level engineer, you will guide technical direction and mentor junior engineers while maintaining hands-on involvement in complex cryogenic system design and deployment. REQUIREMENTS: - Master's degree in physics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, or closely related field - 7+ years of experience in the cryo industry - Experience designing and evaluating performance of complex cryogenic systems - Experience operating and maintaining dilution, sorption, and 1K cryostats - Experience with cryogenic wiring, sensors, and heaters - Experience with UHV systems in cryogenic environments: pumping, leak detection, sealing and joining techniques - Experience with CAD systems and manufacturing PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - PhD in physics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, or closely related field - 10+ years of experience in the cryo industry - Experience managing complex production lines - Experience managing customer projects - Experience with free-space or fiber optics - Experience with superconducting magnet integration
