Veza, now part of ServiceNow, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Graph Data Platform team. You will serve as a technical leader for the Veza Access Graph, a platform managing over 30 billion access permissions for enterprises. This role combines deep technical contributions with architectural leadership across a high-impact infrastructure team. You will act as the technical expert and subject-matter expert (SME) for the Access Graph, identifying and solving complex problems with no established precedent. You'll design and improve the robust, scalable systems behind identity and access management, setting coding standards and engineering best practices for the team. You will identify opportunities to simplify systems, reduce redundancy, and drive large-scale platform simplification while delivering significant direct technical contributions and independently driving workstream-level design reviews. On the roadmap and execution side, you will set priorities for workstreams in your area, drive planning and design, and delegate key components to individual contributors and stakeholders. You'll identify gaps, dependencies, and unresolved problems, partnering with customers and stakeholders to close them. You operate autonomously while consistently delivering high-quality work on time. You will also mentor team leads and individual contributors, helping define interview loops, identify talent gaps, and build coaching plans. You'll break complex roadmaps into clear workstreams and milestones, driving alignment across product managers, technical program managers, engineering managers, team leads, and dependency teams. You'll represent your team's roadmap in company-wide initiatives and model ServiceNow's core values. Veza's Access Graph maps an organization's entire identity ecosystem across users, groups, roles, policies, permissions, and resources, providing deep visibility and control over human, non-human, and agentic identities across SaaS, cloud, on-premises, and custom applications. The platform is trusted by global enterprises including Blackstone, Expedia, and Wynn Resorts for privileged access monitoring, non-human identity security, access entitlement management, and identity governance. Requirements: - 10+ years of professional backend software development experience, with focus on scalable distributed systems, data management, identity, security, or related domains - Deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals: consistency models, partitioning/sharding, replication, consensus, failure modes at scale - Graph database internals knowledge: traversal algorithms, query planning/optimization, indexing strategies (not just querying existing graph APIs) - Go at a systems-programming level: concurrency patterns, memory/performance tuning, production experience building and testing backend services - Large-scale data modeling: schema design for graphs handling high cardinality and fan-out - Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs in microservice architectures - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) - Familiarity with caching mechanisms in distributed systems - Track record of technical decisions with organization-wide impact, not just execution within assigned mandate - Experience setting technical direction or standards adopted by multiple teams - Systems design for correctness and rollback safety in high-stakes infrastructure (access/identity data qualifies) - Fluency with AI-assisted engineering: using LLM-based tools (Claude Code, Copilot, or similar) to accelerate design exploration, code review, debugging, and documentation, while knowing when to trust generated output versus verifying it Nice to have: - Storage engine or query engine experience: having built or deeply modified one (Neo4j internals or comparable) - Deep knowledge of relational algebra and graph algorithms, with experience across OLTP and OLAP systems - Track record of using AI tools to multiply personal and team output on complex, large-codebase work beyond autocomplete-level usage - Identity and access management concepts (RBAC/ABAC, permission graphs, entitlement modeling) - Security or compliance-adjacent engineering background - Graduate degree
