Instructure is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of up to eight engineers within the Assessment Group. This is a hands-on people leadership role focused on team execution, engineer growth, and connecting team work to broader company strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing day-to-day guidance and removing blockers to delivery
- Conduct regular one-on-ones with direct reports and provide continuous, honest feedback
- Own team delivery: track progress, adjust priorities, and maintain team health
- Mentor engineers using the company's engineering competency framework and build redundancy to eliminate single points of failure
- Lead hiring for your team: define roles, build interview panels, run debriefs, and make final decisions
- Review RFCs and technical specifications; co-sign off on architectural decisions
- Enforce engineering quality and process standards including code review, incident response, and tech radar compliance
- Track delivery and reliability metrics; coach engineers on performance expectations
- Partner with product, design, and other engineering teams to plan work and align with company strategy
- Manage team budget and flag risks early
You'll stay close to the codebase to guide technical decisions without writing production code day-to-day. This role requires balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management and strategic alignment.
Instructure offers competitive compensation with an ownership program for all full-time employees, flexible work culture (remote, hybrid, and in-office options vary by role and location), generous time off including local holidays and an annual December recharge period, comprehensive wellness and mental health support, learning and development resources with tuition reimbursement, and a culture rooted in inclusivity and meaningful connection.
Requirements:
- Experience managing software engineers, ideally with a background at senior engineer level or above before transitioning to management
- Demonstrated track record of delegating work while maintaining technical depth to guide team decisions
- Comfort giving direct, caring feedback including difficult conversations
- Experience running a complete hiring process from job requisition through offer
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical tradeoffs to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders
