Rebar is building an AI operating system for commercial HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing. The company's quoting platform has processed tens of thousands of projects across North America, serving many of the top firms in the industry. With a $14M Series A from leading construction tech investors, Rebar is entering a growth phase focused on AI-native products that will transform how the construction industry operates. As a Software Engineer focused on product, you will own the engineering behind key product expansion, quality improvements, and the architecture of the application customers use daily. This is a full-stack role with a frontend skew. You'll ship and own features end-to-end, from the browser-based Konva canvas editor through the API and database. The core technical challenges are not CRUD screens but rather rendering performance on enormous documents (plansets with thousands of pages), correctness in collaborative editing where multiple estimators mark up and edit the same document simultaneously, and state management that survives unreliable jobsite networks. Key responsibilities include: - Owning runtime quality of the product: interaction latency, rendering performance, memory, and correctness on real customer projects - Owning the hard client-side architecture: the canvas editor, collaborative document layer, and state management - Helping set strong engineering standards as the org scales - Raising the review and testing bar with meaningful end-to-end coverage - Shipping features end-to-end, designing data models and APIs rather than waiting on others You should have technical depth plus the taste to know what not to build, and you should care deeply about how the product feels under a user's hands. You should be able to discuss past work optimizing slow, heavy interfaces—what you profiled, measured, shipped, and deliberately left alone. Your opinions on testing should come from real experience being burned by gaps. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years building production web applications with significant time in a large, long-lived codebase - Deep React and TypeScript expertise; understanding of how rendering actually works - Real browser performance work: profiling, interaction latency, memory, rendering optimization - Ownership of complex client-side state in production (beyond fetch-and-render patterns) - Solid backend fundamentals: API design, relational data modeling, migrations, production server-side code (Python and Postgres on AWS/GCP) - Comfortable owning a domain end-to-end, including production incidents NICE TO HAVE: - Canvas or WebGL rendering at scale (Konva, Pixi, Three, or custom) - Real-time collaboration and CRDTs (Yjs, Automerge, ShareDB) and their failure modes - Offline and unreliable-network handling (IndexedDB, local persistence, reconnect/conflict behavior) - Backend depth beyond CRUD: Postgres query/schema performance, durable async workflows (Temporal), or server-side real-time systems
