Airbnb's AirCover Insurance Platform team is seeking a Software Engineer to build backend systems powering Host liability insurance, Experiences liability insurance, and Host damage protection. The team is expanding insurance products across global markets and building experimentation capabilities to measure coverage adoption.
In this role, you will contribute to backend services and APIs for policy, coverage, enrollment, and regional rules that scale to new markets. You'll translate product and regulatory requirements into clean, well-tested code and configurable platform behavior. Key responsibilities include implementing experimentation hooks, logging, and metrics to enable Product and Data Science teams to test offers and measure attach rates; partnering with Product, Design, Data Science, Legal, and other engineering teams on high-impact deliverables; using data to identify gaps in conversion and reliability; and participating in code reviews, technical design discussions, and operational improvements.
A typical day involves designing, building, and operating distributed backend services in a service-oriented architecture with reliable monitoring, logging, and alerting. You'll write and review code, apply sound engineering judgment, build data pipelines and events supporting analytics and experiments, collaborate with infrastructure, security, and privacy teams on data protection across regions, and participate in on-call rotations to improve system reliability.
This is a US-remote-eligible position. You must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity (check Airbnb's careers page for the current exclusion list). The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites as agreed with your manager.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on backend services
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go)
- Experience building and operating services and APIs, with working knowledge of relational databases and SQL
- Bachelor's and/or Master's degree, preferably in Computer Science, or equivalent experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with distributed systems and service-oriented architecture in production
- Familiarity with A/B testing or experimentation systems, and comfort using data to inform product decisions
- Experience in insurance, payments, fintech, or other regulated domains
- Experience with multi-region or configurable, rules-driven platforms
- Ability to work through ambiguity and collaborate deeply with cross-functional teams
- Strong communication skills for explaining technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences
