Neo4j is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Sharding Engineering team, which owns Infinigraph (database sharding for large data volumes) and Composite (distributed query execution technology). The team builds and operates these capabilities as managed offerings on Aura, Neo4j's fully managed graph database as a service running on Kubernetes across Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure.
In this role, you will work on the Aura control plane for sharded and composite databases, building Go services and Kubernetes machinery that provision, scale, and reliably operate sharded and composite clusters at the data volumes customers require. Key responsibilities include:
- Building and evolving the Aura control plane in Go, managing shards, composite instances, clusters, and their lifecycles declaratively through Kubernetes rather than by hand
- Developing APIs, operators, and the infrastructure that translates customer requests on Aura into running, reachable databases
- Tracking down and fixing bugs, addressing downstream test failures, documenting features, and participating in cross-team design meetings
- Studying recent database research and contributing to design discussions
- Participating in daily stand-ups, design meetings, and retrospectives
- Learning, experimenting, and specializing in topics of interest while growing yourself, the team, and the product
Neo4j is a well-funded, rapidly scaling graph database company (recently surpassed $200M ARR, valued at $2B+, backed by Eurazeo, GV, and Inovia Capital). The platform is used by 84% of the Fortune 100 and 58% of the Fortune 500. The company emphasizes relationships, inclusiveness, innovation, and customer success.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Production-level software development experience
- Strong Go experience across multiple projects, from scripting to larger microservice-style applications, plus knowledge of the Go build and packaging system
- Strong Kubernetes experience, including built-in resources (Pods, Deployments, StatefulSets) and running stateful workloads
- Experience with modern continuous integration: configuring pipelines from merged PR to production, building and running Docker images
- Ability to work independently within a flexible software development organization
- Ability to communicate about and collaborate on complex topics
NICE TO HAVE:
- Java, Scala, or other JVM experience
- Familiarity with the Kubernetes operator pattern and Custom Resources
- Understanding of database internals, compilers, or query languages
- Experience with asynchronous and reactive programming
- Experience with distributed systems (usage, administration, or development) and interest in recent developments
- Experience integrating with Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure
- Experience with observability practices (tracing, logging, metrics exporting)
- Experience building or operating managed cloud services (control planes, multi-tenant platforms, database-as-a-service)
