Instructure is seeking a mid-level software engineer to join the Canvas Career team, building intuitive and scalable web experiences for educators and learners globally. The role spans full-stack development across React, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS, with flexibility for engineers to specialize in frontend or backend while growing across the stack.
You will contribute to production features end-to-end: building clean, accessible user interfaces (WCAG-compliant), connecting them to reliable backend APIs, and writing maintainable, well-tested code (unit, integration, and e2e). You'll participate in peer code reviews, collaborate closely with senior engineers, product managers, and designers to break down problems and deliver user-facing features, and help maintain high service health through logging, metrics, and incident troubleshooting. The role requires onsite collaboration on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as part of Instructure's hybrid model. REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Demonstrated experience with modern web development (frontend, backend, or full-stack)
- Strong motivation and curiosity to work across both frontend (React) and backend (Node.js/TypeScript) environments
- Proven ability and enthusiasm to learn new technologies, frameworks, and domain concepts quickly
- Solid foundational knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL or MySQL)
- Product-oriented mindset with care for user experience, code quality, and reliable shipping
- Good communication skills and collaborative approach to teamwork
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot)
- Hands-on experience with React, TypeScript, Node.js, or AWS
- Familiarity with REST APIs, GraphQL, or database ORMs/query builders
- Prior experience in edtech or with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
- Understanding of basic web security principles (OWASP, OAuth/OIDC)
