Salary: USD 162,000 - 190,000 / annual
The Application Platform team at Airbnb builds application-level building blocks that enable engineers and AI agents across the company to ship product behavior safely and quickly without managing underlying infrastructure. You will own some of Airbnb's most critical services, including dynamic configuration, distributed counting, asynchronous job processing systems, and application gateways.
In this role, you will work on distributed systems focused on building and maintaining high-scale, production-facing services in the critical path of user requests. The systems owned by the team support numerous critical services where any downtime can result in platform-wide outages. You will collaborate closely with product and infrastructure engineering teams to build new features and evolve systems to meet evolving business challenges.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include:
• Designing and implementing distributed systems: You will be hands-on, designing significant portions of production services, implementing core features in collaboration with teammates, formulating rollout and testing plans, and participating in on-call rotations.
• Maintaining and debugging existing systems: This involves fixing bugs, improving test coverage, enhancing performance, contributing to production excellence, adding features, conducting code reviews, and creating observability dashboards.
• Providing technical support to other engineers: Answer questions, debug code, troubleshoot problems, and partner with stakeholders to understand feature requests, design, implement, and ship solutions.
• Staying current with emerging technologies: Monitor industry trends, particularly in AI, to identify technologies that can improve system architecture and capabilities.
• Collaborating across Airbnb: Work on company-wide initiatives, partner with external teams and stakeholders, and ensure team success contributes to overall platform and community success.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of industry experience
• Experience working on distributed systems and evaluating trade-offs
• Proficiency in Java, microservices, observability systems, and debugging distributed and multi-threaded systems
• Ability to embrace an AI-first engineering approach, using LLM-powered agents to generate and iterate on code while focusing on problem-solving, system design, and quality oversight
• Proficiency in technical communication: writing design documents, presenting in design reviews, writing effective post-mortems
• Proactive, clear communication and collaboration within and across teams through code reviews and architecture discussions
• Motivated to contribute to positive team culture and building belonging
