Okta is seeking a Software Backend Architect to join the Access Essentials organization, which drives the company's core mission of designing and delivering robust authentication and authorization solutions. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in shaping next-generation identity and security architectures, solving complex high-impact technical challenges, defining long-term product strategy, and elevating engineering standards across the organization.
You will be a hands-on expert developer with deep technical expertise in Java, passionate about building high-quality, secure, and performant applications and frameworks. You will lead technical projects involving 20+ engineers across multiple workstreams, drive technical strategy, and mentor other engineers. This is not just a builder role—you will be a force multiplier who creates frameworks and solutions that enable other teams to be more productive.
Key responsibilities include designing and building solutions to maintain the platform for scale, working with cloud infrastructure to manage and deploy reliable and performant infrastructure and product code at scale. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Quality) across multiple geographies, bringing excellent communication skills and proven ability to work in distributed environments.
The ideal candidate is excited by cutting-edge security and identity management challenges, has demonstrable experience leading large-scale architectural initiatives, and understands the nuances of building enterprise-grade software systems.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- 18+ years of software development experience, with at least 12+ years designing and building enterprise-grade software using Java at scale
- Strong hands-on experience designing and developing enterprise software using Java with Spring Boot
- Deep understanding of object-oriented programming principles, design patterns, server-side technologies, and distributed system concepts (caching, asynchronous processing, multi-threading)
- Strong experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or GraphDB)
- Skilled in debugging and troubleshooting complex Java codebases
- Passionate about writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code with deep focus on security
- Solid experience with cloud infrastructure platforms, particularly AWS and GCP
- Proven experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban), CI/CD pipelines, and automation tools
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders across multiple geographies
- Prior experience as an Architect/Technical Lead leading large-scale architectural initiatives
NICE TO HAVE:
- Strong understanding of IAM protocols (FIDO, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, SCIM, OpenID Connect) and identity management best practices
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, secure coding practices, and certifications like CISSP or Security+
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks and basic UI development
- Prior experience building teams from the ground up
