CIQ builds enterprise infrastructure powering demanding workloads across operating systems, AI infrastructure, high-performance computing, and cloud-native orchestration. The company is the founding support partner of Rocky Linux and develops RLC Pro Enterprise Linux distributions, Fuzzball workload orchestration, Warewulf Pro cluster provisioning, and Ascender Pro automation. Customers include major enterprises, government agencies, and research institutions in HPC, AI/ML, defense, and regulated industries. As a Principal Linux Engineer, you will own software solutions for Rocky Linux from CIQ (RLC), with primary responsibility for building, patching, and testing userspace packages in the operating system. You will improve tooling and automation for the package-building process, understand CVE remediation in RPM packages shipped to customers, and customize, optimize, and create packages to enhance customer experience. You will build comprehensive testing for both specific software and system-wide functionality. Key responsibilities include: - Collaborating with engineering, product, open-source community, and sales teams to develop relevant solutions - Participating in architecture-level discussions, planning, and implementation - Documenting projects to share knowledge and facilitate user integration - Driving proofs of concept and minimum viable products - Developing automated tests to ensure quality - Adopting a fast-release, frequent-release software development mentality - Leveraging source control (GitHub/GitLab) while collaborating with internal teams and the open-source community - Supporting multiple services pre-launch through system design consulting, platform development, capacity planning, and launch reviews - Deploying on standard server architectures, virtual machines, and cloud infrastructure REQUIREMENTS: - Proven work experience as a Linux Engineer, Linux Development Engineer, or Software Developer with focus on Linux OS - At least 4 years of experience supporting Linux and at least 2 years of experience building Linux packages - Understanding of Linux OS packaging (RPM or DEB) - Familiarity with CVEs and remediation for older code versions - Deep understanding of Linux OS internals, including package interactions - Ability to work independently and collaboratively in remote team environment - Proven experience with Linux administration, Linux internals, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools/processes - Familiarity with Ansible playbooks and/or DoD STIG/SCAP/RADIX processes - Proficiency in Bash, YAML, XML, JSON, REST APIs/OpenAPI, HTTP Get/Post - Familiarity with Python, GoLang, Kubernetes, and other engineering tools/technologies - Strong problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills - Ability to pivot to new challenges in fast-paced startup environment using agile methodologies - Collaborative, humble, honest attitude with commitment to continuous improvement
