Pebl is a global employment platform that uses AI to help companies hire, pay, and manage employees across 185+ countries. The company is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer - UI Architect to define the future of its user interface, with a focus on AI-agent-driven UI composition. In this individual contributor role, you will spearhead the development of AI-first, user-facing product experiences and lead the adoption of Google's A2UI (Agent-to-User Interface) specification. You will own the architectural vision for scalable, user-centric UI systems and the design system that underpins them, treating UI as declarative data that agents can compose in real time rather than hand-built screens. Key responsibilities include: - Leading AI experiences development in close collaboration with AI/agent and platform engineering teams - Defining how agents describe interfaces as declarative, framework-agnostic payloads that render through a native React component catalog - Owning the renderer strategy, component catalog design, event/round-trip model, and transport approach connecting agents to the front end - Defining and driving front-end system architecture focused on scalability, maintainability, and performance - Owning and evolving the design system and shared component library (tokens, primitives, composition patterns, theming, accessibility) - Championing an "AI-native" engineering culture, integrating Claude Code, Codex, and other LLM tools into daily workflows - Partnering cross-functionally with AI/agent engineers, backend engineers, product managers, and designers - Evaluating and recommending tools, libraries, and frameworks, including emerging agent/generative-UI standards - Supervising and reviewing team work for alignment with architecture decisions, coding standards, and design patterns - Mentoring engineers in implementing complex front-end and agent-driven solutions - Identifying technical debt and architectural improvements - Advocating for accessibility, usability, and user experience improvements, including for dynamically generated interfaces - Making deliberate tradeoffs in service of architectural vision and customer value This is a hybrid position based in Palo Alto, California, requiring in-office collaboration at least 3 days per week. You will work across ReactJS, TypeScript, Postgres, and AWS in a serverless environment. Requirements: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field - 10+ years of professional software development experience with strong focus on front-end development and UI architecture - Deep, hands-on expertise in ReactJS, TypeScript, and modern front-end engineering, with proven track record of setting and driving front-end architectural vision for scalable, maintainable, high-performance UI systems - Demonstrated experience building, scaling, or serving as primary owner/contributor to a design system or shared component library (tokens, reusable primitives, composition patterns, theming, accessibility) - Hands-on experience across two dimensions: (1) designing and building AI-first, user-facing product experiences (generative or LLM-powered interfaces shipped to real users), and (2) using LLM-powered coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, and other AI coding assistants to accelerate SDLC and improve code quality; demonstrated depth in at least one area with working fluency in the other - Familiarity with agent-driven and generative-UI approaches, ideally Google's A2UI and related protocols (A2A, AG-UI), or demonstrated ability to go deep on emerging standards fast and lead adoption - Bias for delivering customer value by cutting waste, optimizing workflows, iterating in small steps, and continuously improving - Solid understanding of backend technologies such as Postgres and AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, etc.) is a plus - Solid knowledge of performance optimization, accessibility standards, and responsive design - Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions, make architectural decisions, and align engineering with business objectives, with exceptional communication and ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders - Bonus: Experience with serverless architectures and growth-focused engineering projects
