Relay is a digital banking platform serving self-made business owners with tools for financial clarity and cash flow management. The Voyager team is Relay's innovation center, building AI and technology foundations that enable differentiated product experiences while exploring emerging technologies. In this Senior Software Engineer role, you will: - Build and deploy secure, reusable LLM systems that power product experiences, owning them across design, deployment, and monitoring - Lead exploratory R&D initiatives and proof-of-concepts to evaluate emerging technologies and provide clear recommendations on adoption - Enable other engineering teams with tooling, patterns, and guidance for shipping AI workflows quickly and safely - Partner with product teams as the AI expert, helping them make sound technical decisions rather than building everything for them - Proactively identify and drive technical, process, and product improvements, influencing long-term strategy You'll work across the full maturity spectrum—from hardening infrastructure that other teams depend on to prototyping technologies that may not yet exist. The tech stack includes React, TypeScript, React Native (front-end), Node.js, Terraform, and AWS services (DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, ECS, ElasticSearch). The team uses Cursor, Claude, GitHub, Datadog, and Jira. Relay values relentless reinvention, autonomy, ownership, and building with AI rather than just using it. You'll be energized by complexity and ambiguity, seek feedback actively, and care deeply about impact on small business success. REQUIREMENTS: - 3+ years of full-stack software engineering experience - Led development of significant components or features with minimal oversight - Ability to move between exploration and production, knowing when a spike is sufficient versus when something needs to be built to last - Strong judgment about emerging technology; can distinguish genuinely useful from currently loud - Mentor junior engineers and drive team skill development - Proactively enhance code quality, optimize performance, and streamline development - Lifelong learner, curious about new frameworks and best practices - Thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments; comfortable with ambiguity - Collaborative team player; take end-to-end ownership with creative problem-solving BONUS (not required): - Startup or high-growth tech company experience - Hands-on LLM experience (self-hosting, open models, retrieval systems, evaluation, agentic workflows) - Built platform or shared services for other engineering teams - JavaScript/TypeScript experience - AWS services and continuous deployment pipeline knowledge
