Xero is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Payments Platform team in Vancouver. The Payments Platform is a core area of investment, enabling small businesses to pay employees, purchase supplies, and seize growth opportunities through Xero's ecosystem.
In this role, you will own significant end-to-end initiatives spanning technical design, implementation, and production operations. You'll help evolve a growing platform by building reusable, provider-agnostic capabilities across payment orchestration, provider integrations, onboarding, risk and compliance, reconciliation, and bill payments. You'll stay hands-on in production code, work through architectural trade-offs where customer simplicity, financial control, reliability, and scalability matter, and collaborate closely with product and engineering partners.
Key technical challenges include: building a shared payments platform that enables teams to launch new payment products faster; simplifying complex global bill payments for small businesses while maintaining accuracy and security; designing and delivering high-throughput, reliable distributed services at scale; improving existing systems incrementally while delivering customer value and contributing to long-term architecture; and applying AI to product problems while maintaining customer trust.
You will help shape engineering practices and quality standards as the Vancouver Payments Platform team grows, mentoring peers, sharing technical knowledge, and helping teammates develop through code reviews, pairing, and documentation.
The role is hybrid, based in the Vancouver office (333 Seymour St) with flexibility to work from home and "boost days" (1-2 days per week) in the office for collaboration and complex problem-solving.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proven track record delivering highly available, distributed systems and high-throughput services on cloud-native platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of significant work, from design through rollout and production validation
- Strong architectural thinking and ability to balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
- Proficiency in modern backend languages (Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or C++); willingness to learn C# and .NET (existing experience a bonus)
- Passion for staying hands-on in production code and technical deep dives; good judgment using AI tools to move faster and raise quality
- Commitment to mentoring peers, sharing knowledge, and helping teammates grow
