Salary: USD 165,000 - 227,000 / annual

Okta is seeking a Staff Engineer to join the OIG (Identity & Access Governance) team in San Francisco. You will own the development, design, and maintenance of enterprise-grade access governance products serving thousands of organizations at scale. This is an individual contributor role focused on technical depth and systems thinking, where you will drive architecture and feature evolution across different governance personas while collaborating with product, design, and engineering teams. Key responsibilities include: - End-to-end ownership of feature areas from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and post-launch monitoring - Design and ship high-quality, production-ready features with focus on correctness, reliability, and performance - Deliver bug fixes and handle customer-reported issues with speed - Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and maintain high engineering standards - Partner with Product, QA, and Site Reliability Engineering teams on scoping and deployment - Influence technical alignment across multiple teams and stakeholders without direct authority This role is ideal for someone who thinks in systems, leads with craft, and is energized by building enterprise software that millions depend on daily. The technical challenges are genuinely hard—spanning microservices, event-driven architectures, distributed systems at scale, and enterprise reliability patterns. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated ability to independently own and deliver complex features in production - Proven track record architecting and delivering large-scale, distributed systems in production serving enterprise customers - Deep expertise in microservices, event-driven architectures, APIs, and data modeling at scale - Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Go, or equivalent JVM/cloud-native languages used in Okta's backend stack - Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive technical alignment across teams - Experience designing systems meeting enterprise reliability, scalability, and security requirements (multi-tenancy, high availability, audit logging, RBAC/ABAC) - Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to make complex technical topics accessible to engineers and non-engineers - B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent PREFERRED: - Experience building identity, access management, or governance (IAM/IGA) products or platforms - Familiarity with workflow engines or approval/routing systems (finite state machines, BPM-style systems) - Experience with enterprise SaaS platforms serving large, complex customer organizations - Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure) and modern observability tooling ADDITIONAL: Must be on US soil (50 states, DC, or outlying US areas as defined by FAR 2.101). No citizenship requirement.
