NetBox Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with 5+ years of experience to join the Observability Team. Observability is a critical component of network automation and central to the company's mission to simplify building and managing complex networks.
The Observability Team is responsible for Network Discovery & Reconciliation, Network Observability & Monitoring, and Agents & Fleet Management. The team delivers both closed-source and open-source software, owning projects including Orb, Diode, and pktvisor.
In this role, you will:
- Develop idiomatic Go code for backend services
- Design and implement protobuf APIs using gRPC and Connect RPC
- Work with PostgreSQL (including schema migrations), Redis, and RabbitMQ
- Build multi-tenant services with OAuth2/OIDC authentication
- Implement event-driven systems with at-least-once delivery guarantees and idempotent consumers
- Apply deep observability and instrumentation knowledge, including OpenTelemetry
- Collaborate with product owners to deliver compelling user experiences
- Work with the NetBox team to create observability tooling within the NetBox ecosystem
- Partner with the platform team to ensure seamless integration with NetBox Cloud and Enterprise
- Engage with community members as users and contributors
- Use AI coding agents effectively: set constraints, review output, and maintain accountability for correctness, security, and tests
- Write technical specifications with diagrams and communicate clearly across teams
You will bring a solid understanding of networking fundamentals including devices, configuration, protocols, and network layers.
Desirable experience includes:
- 3+ years in fast-paced startup environments
- MQTT or other device/IoT protocols, or gNMI
- Kubernetes in production
- Django, NetBox, or NetBox plugin development
- Python for tests and tooling
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Deep experience with idiomatic Go
- Experience with protobuf APIs (gRPC and Connect RPC)
- PostgreSQL experience including migrations
- Redis and RabbitMQ experience
- Multi-tenant service architecture knowledge
- OAuth2/OIDC implementation experience
- Event-driven systems experience with at-least-once delivery and idempotent consumers
- Deep knowledge of observability and instrumentation, including OpenTelemetry
- Solid understanding of networking: devices, configuration, protocols, and layers
- Ability to use AI coding agents effectively
- Strong technical communication and writing skills
