Arista Networks is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work on Layer1 software that manages the physical layer of networking infrastructure. In this role, you will develop control software for physical connectivity components ranging from standard 1GBASE-T connectors to 1.6T long-reach optics that provide fiber connectivity across continents. You will work across diverse forwarding engines, connectors, and interface chips (gearboxes) to enable hardware platforms to support varied physical connectivity options.
Key responsibilities include:
- Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to define innovative Layer1 features
- Architect, design, and manage feature development from definition through deployment
- Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python; review specifications and build automated test infrastructure
- Collaborate with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring new Layer1 components (Phys, Transceivers) to market
- Design optimal software control interfaces for managing Layer1 components in partnership with hardware engineers
- Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
- Work with Customer Support Engineers and customers to analyze, mitigate, and fix production network issues
- Collaborate with System Test Engineers to resolve test failures
- Mentor junior engineers in Arista's software development environment
You will own projects end-to-end and be responsible for quality across all deliverables. The role spans all aspects of software development: feature addition, debugging, and performance optimization. REQUIREMENTS:
- Education and experience: BS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering plus 8 years experience; OR MS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering plus 6 years experience; OR Ph.D. in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering plus 3 years experience; OR equivalent work experience
- Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design solutions and implement features independently
- Ability to work in small teams
- Preferred: Knowledge of digital communication technologies (modulation, signal encoding schemes); understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems; experience with low-level hardware components
