Aiven is a global team of over 400 people building a cloud data platform that makes open-source databases, search, streaming, and application infrastructure accessible to everyone. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build and lead a new team focused entirely on internal developer experience (DevEx).
In this role, you will shape how Aiven engineers write, test, and ship code. Your work spans development environments, internal tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and developer infrastructure. Every improvement you make directly impacts the daily workflow of every engineering team at Aiven. You will be a generalist who combines software engineering best practices with hands-on infrastructure work, and you'll build this team from day one.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with engineering teams to identify and prioritize concrete problems, then implement solutions
- Own and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines
- Build new developer tooling or evaluate and adopt existing tools, driving organizational adoption
- Establish sensible defaults across the organization, including project templates, testing conventions, and documentation standards
- Help shape how humans and AI agents develop safely side by side
The ideal candidate is a generalist equally comfortable writing fast, robust shell scripts and managing cloud infrastructure. You should have an ownership instinct—the kind of person who fixes flaky builds, writes onboarding scripts, or cleans up pipelines because they slow the team down, even without being asked.
Requirements:
- Several years of professional software engineering experience, shipping and maintaining software in production
- Hands-on experience with Linux, containers, and Infrastructure as Code
- Fluency in English (written and verbal)
- Ownership instinct and proactive problem-solving mindset
Nice-to-have qualifications:
- Experience with observability tooling
- Familiarity with user experience or product design, or a habit of treating fellow engineers as users
- Familiarity with open-source data technologies such as Apache Kafka, PostgreSQL, or ClickHouse
