Salary: CAD 175,500 - 214,500 / annual

Relay is a digital banking platform designed to help self-made business owners manage their finances with clarity and confidence. The company is building banking products that serve millions of small businesses, and the Engineering team is central to this mission. In this Senior Software Engineer II role, you will shape technical direction across interconnected systems and raise the engineering bar company-wide. This is a high-impact individual contributor position focused on the most ambitious, highest-risk work. Key Responsibilities: - Lead architecture decisions and set technical standards for quality, reliability, security, and maintainability across interconnected systems - Own ambiguous, cross-team initiatives from problem definition through measurable outcomes, managing priorities and dependencies - Identify important problems before they're formally assigned and connect technical decisions to customer needs, business priorities, cost, and risk - Influence teams across organizational boundaries using context and evidence rather than formal authority - Create practices, tooling, documentation, and guardrails that improve delivery and operational effectiveness across Engineering - Coach engineers and delegate meaningful ownership to develop the next generation of technical leaders You'll work with a modern tech stack: React and TypeScript on the front-end, Node.js and TypeScript on the back-end, AWS services (DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, ECS), and tools like Cursor, Claude, GitHub, Datadog, and Jira. The role requires someone who has led architecture for complex systems, driven cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problems to measurable results, and grown engineers through coaching and delegation. You should thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments and be comfortable navigating ambiguity. Bonus qualifications (not required): experience in startups or high-growth tech, JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency, AWS knowledge, or background in fintech/banking/regulated environments. Requirements: - Demonstrated experience leading architecture for complex, interconnected systems and owning highest-risk technical decisions - Track record of driving cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problem definition to measurable results - Ability to connect technical trade-offs to customer impact, business priorities, cost, and risk - Proven ability to influence without formal authority, aligning teams and stakeholders through context and evidence - Experience creating standards, tooling, or processes that improved delivery and operations across multiple teams - Demonstrated success growing engineers through coaching and delegation, with success measured by the technical leaders developed - Comfort navigating ambiguity and change in fast-paced environments
