Gridware is a San Francisco-based climate tech company pioneering active grid response (AGR) technology to protect and enhance electrical grid reliability and safety. The company uses high-precision sensors and advanced software to monitor electrical, physical, and environmental aspects of the grid, enabling proactive maintenance and fault mitigation.
You will join the Field Software team as a Senior Software Engineer, owning backend systems end to end. Your work directly impacts field crews completing installations and utilities managing their grid infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and own backend services supporting the full lifecycle of Gridware devices and field assets
- Build GraphQL APIs supporting an offline-first mobile application used by field crews and utility linemen
- Develop reliable data pipelines and integrations for exchanging asset data with utilities
- Design systems and data models representing grid infrastructure, assets, and their relationships
- Own systems end to end: architecture, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and production operation
- Work directly with field crews to understand operational workflows and validate software in real-world conditions
- Partner with Field Operations, Product, Data, and other engineering teams to translate workflows into scalable software
- Contribute to architecture and technical decisions as systems and field deployments scale
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
- Strong experience with Python and PostgreSQL, including schema changes to live production databases
- Experience designing and building production GraphQL APIs and data pipelines where correctness and reliability are critical
- Experience building and operating distributed systems, including debugging and understanding production failures
- Experience deploying and operating services in cloud environments (AWS and Kubernetes preferred)
- Experience using AI coding tools effectively while maintaining ownership of design, quality, and code correctness
- Strong technical judgment, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Track record of owning software systems end to end and proactively identifying and addressing problems

- Apollo Federation, SQLAlchemy, or async Python
- Backend systems for mobile or offline-first applications
- TypeScript and full-stack contributions
- Event-driven systems (Kafka, SQS)
- Observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Sentry)
- Data lakehouse technologies (Databricks, Apache Iceberg, Trino)
- Geospatial data, GIS, or utility data experience
- Software for mobile applications, IoT, connected devices, utilities, or physical-world systems
